Research Scientist

Research Scientists design and carry out fundamental, investigations that expand knowledge and may result in new products, new processes or new business areas. We're looking for Research Scientists in the following areas:

  • Computer Science – requires expertise in information retrieval, computational linguistics, machine learning, computer systems and storage, information management, matrix and graph algorithms, large scale data mining or human-computer interaction/user experience.
  • Economics – requires expertise in microeconomic theory, game theory and mechanism design or experimental economics.
  • Social Sciences – requires expertise in ethnography, social network analysis or online consumer behavior and measurement.

Applied Scientist

The Applied Sciences teams are looking for candidates with strong analytical and software skills to join our team. You would help improve the relevance and revenue of our products. Applied Scientists are responsible for ensuring the state of the scientific art in existing products, initiating a new product line or a new area of business.

Required Skills/Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in computer science, electrical engineering, statistics, mathematics, or equivalent
  • Fluency in Python, Perl, or another scripting language
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills


Research Engineer

We are looking for research engineers to work alongside our world-class scientists to deliver the next generation of businesses to the company. Engineers at Yahoo! Labs have the opportunity to work on a variety of project types, including: rapid prototype and proof-of-concept development, research engineering libraries, tools, and platforms for distributed computing and algorithm evaluation.

In this position you would be working together with our scientists to develop novel software engineering solutions for problems in information retrieval, machine learning, computational linguistics, matrix and graph algorithms, unsupervised clustering, data mining, human-computer interaction/user experience and microeconomics. You will develop end-to-end data mining pipelines for extracting and utilizing user insights from logs, as well as train and deliver machine learned models. The successful candidate will be passionate about software engineering yet able to thrive in a dynamic research environment.

Required skills/qualifications:

  • MS in Computer Science or related field with 3+ years practical experience designing and developing modern, object-oriented, large scale distributed systems
  • Demonstrated proficiency in C++ or Java and at least one scripting language such as Perl, PHP or Python
  • Thorough understanding and practice in the use of object-oriented design patterns and data management systems, relational or object-oriented
  • Specific experience, skill-set and focus on backend systems architecture, building distributed systems and knowledge of working extensively with databases
  • Some experience with large scale programming multithreading projects


Research Engineer, Applied Sciences

We are looking for research engineers to work alongside our world-class scientists to ensure state-of-the-art scientific excellence in Yahoo! products. Research engineers in Yahoo! Labs are responsible for implementation and development including data processing and analysis on several types of projects, such as creation of large-scale research prototypes, rapidly evolving research experiments leading to novel insights and research publications, software and models leading to improved product metrics, and development of leading-edge research platforms to be used in multiple projects.

Required skills/qualifications:

  • MS and 3+ years related industry experience or PhD in Computer Science or related field
  • Understanding of statistics, machine learning, data mining, information retrieval, NLP, search, online advertising or operations research
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Java or C++, and scripting languages such as Python
  • Ability to interpret research results and transform into innovative, consumer-facing products
