Profile

Jayavel Shanmugasundaram is a Principal Research Scientist at Yahoo! Research. Prior to joining Yahoo! in 2006, he spent five years as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Cornell University, and two years as a Researcher at the IBM Almaden Research Center. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin, his masters degree from the University of Massachusetts, and his bachelors degree from the Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli, India, all in Computer Science.

Jayavel's research interests include Online advertising, Internet data management, information retrieval, and query processing in emerging system architectures. He is the author of several publications and patents on these topics, and his research ideas have been implemented in commercial products.

Jayavel regularly serves on the program committees of major conferences such as SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, SIGIR, and KDD. He has co-chaired the WWW 2008 Conference Industrial track, the XIME-P 2007 Workshop and the ICDE 2005 Conference Semi-Structured Data and XML track. Jayavel has also served as an invited expert and co-editor of the XQuery and XPath Full-Text language developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Jayavel has received an NSF CAREER Award, an IBM Faculty Award, and the James and Mary Tien Excellence in Teaching Award.

  • Yahoo! at VLDB 2008 - Yahoo! walked away with a total of 10 accepted papers, and several Yahoo! researchers served on various program committees.
  • Yahoo! Research at SIGMOD/PODS - Yahoo! Research was well represented at this year’s ACM SIGMOD/PODS conference, held in the bustling city of Beijing, China. The annual conference, which began in 1975, is considered one of the most important regular gatherings in Computer Science.
